Myobrace

How important is a great smile? It is no secret that having an engaging smile and well balanced face is a huge advantage in our modern day society. A beautiful, healthy smile is not only an important part of our self-confidence but also a good reflection of our health.

Crowded / Crooked Teeth do not just happen, they are a symptom as well as a warning sign that your child’s jaw and face is not developing correctly and can led to serious health problems. Although symptoms of this can be evident from a very young age (babies), most practioners usually recommend waiting until a child is much older to treat with traditional orthodontic braces and sometimes even take healthy teeth out just to make room.

The main culprits causing crooked teeth and narrow arches are poor oral habits, such as mouth breathing and incorrect swallowing, combined with the incorrect forces of the muscles of the face – our tongue, our cheeks and our lips. In order to prevent more serious health problems from developing as we grow older, these bad habits should be corrected as early as possible. Early intervention can also lead to results that are not just possible once the face and jaws have stopped growing.

Here at Earl Dental (previously Sandie Earl Dental) we can address some orthodontic issues using innovative MyoFunctional Research Co. (MRC) appliances that address and correct bad oral habits in growing children and also adults. Traditional orthodontic systems are directed at moving teeth – where as Myofunctional appliances are aimed at improving our oral environment by addressing and eliminating over time, the bad habits that are causing our crooked teeth – which leads to corrections in alignment and also better retention.

How Does Myobrace Work?

Myobrace looks similar to an athletic mouthguard and is worn one to two hours during your awake time and every night while sleeping for up to 24 months. You are also expected to carry our simple, quick exercises which focus on problem areas once or twice every day.

The flexible appliance re- trains your lips, tongue and cheek muscles to rest in their correct, optimal position rather then in positions that press against your teeth and jaws causing incorrect growth and muscle development. Lips also learn how to achieve a “proper seal” around your teeth which encourages correct nasal breathing, essential for overall good health.

What is the ideal age to began?

A typical Myobrace treatment tends to take place sometime between the ages of 5 – 10. This treatment is most effective during periods where oral skeleton growth is taking place. However if you notice signs in your infant or toddler that Myobrace may be useful in helping, it can began much earlier.
